DME separation. Air traffic control spacing of aircraft in terms of nautical miles as determined by reference to distance measuring equipment.
dock (aircraft maintenance facility). An area in which the proper scaffolds and work platforms can be put around an aircraft so it can be inspected or repairs can be made.
DOD (domestic object damage). Damage to the components in the gas path of a turbine engine caused by the failure of parts within the engine itself.
DOD FLIP (Department of Defense Flight Information Publication). A publication put out by the Department of Defense and used for flight planning, en route, and terminal operations.
doghouse (mark on a turn and slip indicator dial). A mark on the dial of a four-minute turn and slip indicator that has the shape of a doghouse.
The inside edge of the doghouse is located one needle width away from the edge of the center reference mark on the dial, so a turn in which the needle aligns with the doghouse, a two-needle-width turn, is a standard rate, three degrees per second, turn. A one-needle-width turn on a turn and slip indicator which has doghouses on the dial is a four minute, or 1 1/2-degree-per-second turn.
dog point (threaded fastener). The point of a threaded fastener cut in the form of a cylinder. The length of the dog point is about one half of the diameter of the bolt, and its diameter is slightly less than the diameter of the bolt at the bottom of the threads. A dog point is used as a pilot, or guide, when assembling parts.

doldrums (meteorology). The equatorial belt of calm or light and variable winds between the two tradewind belts.
dolly (shop tool). Any of several types of wheeled platforms used in a maintenance shop to move or store heavy aircraft or engine components.
dolly block (sheet metalworking tool). A hardened steel block having a smooth, curved surface. Dolly blocks are used to back up a mallet when hand-forming sheet metal into compound curves.
domain (magnetic term). Clumps of molecules in a piece of ferromagnetic material that change their magnetic alignment as a group, rather than as individual molecules.
domestic airspace (air traffic control). Airspace which overlies the continental land mass of the United States plus Hawaii and U.S. possessions. Domestic airspace extends to 12 miles offshore.
domestic object damage. See DOD.
donor atom (semiconductor material). Atoms of pentavalent elements (elements having five valence electrons) used to dope silicon or germanium for making semiconductor diodes or transistors.
A donor atom has more electrons than needed for the covalent bonds within the material and donates these extra electrons to acceptor atoms.

donor impurity (semiconductor component). Any of the chemical elements with five valence electrons used to dope silicon or germanium to produce N-type semiconductor material. Phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony are commonly used as donor impurities.
dope (aircraft finishing material). A finishing material used to shrink cotton or linen fabric and make it airtight and weatherproof. Dope is made of a cellulose film base mixed with suitable solvents, thinners, and plasticizers.
