meter-kilogram. The amount of work done when one kilogram of force acts through a distance of one meter.
methanol (wood alcohol). A poisonous liquid alcohol, formed by the distillation of wood pulp. Methanol is used as a fuel, a solvent, and an antifreeze agent.
METO power (maximum except takeoff power). A rating for aircraft reciprocating engines. METO power is the maximum power allowed to be continuously produced by an engine. Takeoff power is usually limited to a given amount of time, such as one minute or five minutes.
metric horsepower. A unit of power equal to 75 meter-kilograms of work per second. One metric horsepower is also equal to approximately 753.5 watts of power.
metric prefixes. The metric system operates on the basis of each unit being a multiple of ten times the base unit. Each value, or multiple of ten, has its own prefix name. The prefixes most commonly used in electrical and electronic work are:
1012Tera------------
 Giga------------109
 Mega-----------106
 Kilo ------------103
 Milli -----------10-3
10-6

 Micro ----------10-9

 Nano -----------10-12

 Pico ------------
MFD (multifunction display). A liquid crystal or CRT display that shows a number of parameters and replaces several analog-type indicators.
MHA (minimum holding altitude) (air traffic control). The lowest altitude prescribed for a holding pattern which assures navigational signal coverage and communications and meets obstacle clearance requirements.
mho. A unit of electrical conductance; it has been replaced by the siemen. One mho (one siemen) is the amount of conductance that allows an electrical pressure of one volt to cause a continuous flow of one ampere of current. The mho is the reciprocal, or opposite, of the ohm.
MHz (megahertz). 1,000,000 cycles per second.
MIA (minimum IFR altitudes). Minimum altitudes for IFR operation as prescribed in 14 CFR Part 91. These altitudes are published on Aeronautical charts and prescribed in 14 CFR Part 95 for airways and routes, and in 14 CFR Part 97 for standard instrument approach procedures. If no applicable minimum altitude is prescribed in 14 CFR Parts 95 or 97, the following minimum IFR altitude applies:
1.
In designated mountainous areas: 2,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal distance of five statute miles from the course to be flown.

2.
Other than mountainous areas: 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal distance of five statute miles from the course to be flown.

3.
As otherwise authorized by the Administrator or assigned by ATC.

mica. A transparent mineral of the silicate family that can be separated into thin sheets. Mica is a very good thermal and electrical insulator. Thin sheets of mica are used as the dielectric in capacitors and as insulators for electric irons and heaters.
Micarta. The registered trade name for a thermosetting phenolic-resin-impregnated cloth. Micarta is used as an electrical insulator, as a chemical-resistant covering for tables and work surfaces, and for pulleys and cable guides in aircraft control systems.
