thermostatic bypass valve (reciprocating engine lubricating system component). A temperature-sensing valve in an oil cooler that opens when the oil is cold and allows it to flow around the core of the cooler, between the core and the cooler jacket. When the oil is hot, the bypass valve closes and forces the oil to flow through the core of the cooler.
thermostatic expansion valve (air conditioning system component). The component in a vapor-cycle cooling system that meters the refrigerant into the evaporator. The amount of refrigerant metered by the thermostatic expansion valve, or TXV, is determined by the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant as it leaves the evaporator coils. The TXV changes the refrigerant from a high-pressure liquid into a spray of low-pressure liquid.
thermoswitch. An electrical switch that closes a circuit when it is exposed to a specified high temperature.
thickness gage. A precision measuring tool made of a series of narrow strips of steel. Each strip is ground to an accurate thickness with the thickness marked on each gage. Thickness gages are used to measure the clearance, or the distance between parts, by finding the thickest gage that can be slipped between them.
thinner (finishing system component). A solvent mixed with a finishing material, such as lacquer, dope, or enamel, to reduce its viscosity so it can be sprayed.
third-class lever. A lever in which the force is applied between the fulcrum and the weight. The force needed to move the weight is greater than the weight, but the distance moved by the weight is greater than that moved by the force.

thixotropic agent (plastic resin component). A material, such as microballoons, added to a resin to give it body and increase its workability.
thorium. A heavy, silvery-white, malleable, metallic chemical element. Thorium’s symbol is Th, its atomic number is 90, and its atomic weight is 232. Thorium is slightly radioactive and is used as an alloy with tungsten to make filaments for incandescent electric lights. It is also a potential source of nuclear energy.
thread (machine fastener component). Helical grooves cut onto the surface of a bolt or screw. Mating threads are cut into the inside of a nut. The threads inside the nut match the threads on the outside of the bolt, and the nut is turned down over the threads of the bolt to produce a clamping action that holds parts of a machine together. A threaded bolt is a form of inclined plane.
thread (textiles). Long filaments made by twisting together short lengths of natural fibers, such as cotton or linen, to form a continuous strand. Threads of synthetic materials are made of a single continuous filament. These are called monofilament threads.
thread pitch (threaded fastener specification). The linear distance from the apex (peak) of one thread to the similar position on the next thread on a threaded fastener.

three-axis automatic pilot. An automatic flight control system for an aircraft that controls the movement of the aircraft about all three of its axes.
