reinforce. To strengthen something by adding additional structural components or by using additional material.
reinforcing tape (aircraft fabric covering component). A narrow strip of woven fabric material placed over the fabric at the points it is being attached to the aircraft structure with ribstitching cord. The reinforcing tape carries a large amount of the load and prevents the fabric from tearing at the stitches.
rejuvenation (aircraft finishes). The process of restoring resilience to an old dope film on a fabric-covered aircraft. When aircraft dope is exposed to the sun for several years, the plasticizers migrate from it, and the dope film become brittle and cracks. Rejuvenator, which is a mixture of strong solvents and plasticizer, is sprayed over the old dope. The solvents penetrate the dope, and the plasticizer restores resilience to the dope film.
rejuvenator (aircraft finishing material). A finishing material used to restore resilience to an old dope film. Rejuvenator contains strong solvents to open up the dried-out dope film and plasticizers to restore resilience to the old dope.
relative bearing (navigation). The number of degrees measured clockwise between the heading of the aircraft and the direction from which the bearing is taken.
relative humidity. The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor the air can hold at its present temperature.
relative motion. Motion of one object with reference to another. One object can be moving and the other object still, or both objects may be moving, but at different rates, or directions.
relative vorticity (meteorology). Vorticity of the air relative to the earth, disregarding the component of vorticity resulting from the earth’s rotation.
relative wind. The direction the wind strikes an airfoil.
relaxation oscillator. A type of electronic oscillator that changes direct current into pulsating DC with a sawtooth waveform. A capacitor is charged through a resistor to produce a slow rise in voltage. At a specified voltage, the gas in a gas-filled electron tube becomes ionized and conducts. The capacitor immediately discharges through this ionized gas.
The frequency of oscillation is determined by the values of the capacitor and the resistor and by the ionization voltage of the gas in the tube. See sawtooth waveform.

relay (electrical component). An electrically operated switch. One switch contact is mounted on a movable steel arm, the armature, which is held away from the fixed contact by a spring. When current flows through the electromagnetic coil of the relay, it pulls the armature down and causes the movable contact to press tightly against the fixed contact, closing the switch.
Relays are used to remotely control a large amount of current by using a small amount of control current flowing through the relay coil. Relays are being replaced in many types of electrical equipment with solid-state components that do the same job, but have no moving parts.
