woof threads. See fill threads. work. A physical measurement of force used to produce movement. Work is the product of the amount of force applied to an object, multiplied by the distance the force causes the object to move, and is measured in such units as foot-pounds, joules, and meter-kilograms. work hardening (metal condition). A method of hardening and strengthening metal that cannot be hardened by heat treatment. When the metal is hammered, rolled, bent, or stretched, it becomes work hardened. working drawings. The classification of drawings that includes detail drawings, assembly drawings, and installation drawings. working voltage (capacitor rating). The maximum amount of DC voltage that can safely be applied across the plates of a capacitor. worm gear. A helical gear mounted on a shaft and meshed with a spur gear whose teeth are cut at an angle to its face. A worm gear is an irreversible type of mechanism. Rotating the shaft on which the worm gear is mounted rotates the spur gear, but the worm gear locks the spur gear so its shaft cannot be rotated. wrench. A hand tool used to turn threaded fasteners such as bolts and nuts. A wrench has a slot or a hexagonal-shaped hole that fits over the head of the fastener and a handle to which a force is applied to turn the fastener. wrinkle finish. A rough paint finish that is often applied to aircraft instrument panels. The surface of wrinkle-finish paint dries quickly, and the material below the surface shrinks as it dries. The shrinkage pulls the surface into a series of small wrinkles. A wrinkle finish does not show fingerprints or small scratches as much as a smooth finish. wrist pin (reciprocating engine component). The hardened and polished steel pin that attaches a piston to the small end of a connecting rod. Wrist pins are called piston pins, and in the United Kingdom, gudgeon pins. wrought iron. A commercial grade of iron used for the manufacture of low-strength items. Wrought iron is malleable (it can be shaped by hammering), tough, and relatively soft. |
