5.1 GENERAL POINTS OF BRIEFING
5.1.1 TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
It is very important to have a solid foundation of Aircraft technical knowledge. But knowing just the technical is not enough. The pupil should read and digest all the relevant operational documents, fuel policies and other company policies. The knowledge of security matters, rules and regulations regarding carriage of Dangerous Goods, Bomb Threat and all other matters concerning the overall safety of the aeroplane is also very important. This background knowledge will help in making good judgment and better decision when called for.
5.1.2 SOP & CHECKLIST DISCIPLINE
It should be emphasized in pupil’s mind how important it is to strictly adhere to the SOP and maintain a strict checklist discipline.
5.1.3 BE A DISCIPLINED PILOT
5.1.3.1 Be a Safe Pilot
Illness :  Ensure you do not have any symptoms of illness.
Medications :  Do not fly if you have been taking prescription or over the counter drugs.
Stress :  Make sure you are not under any psychological pressure from the job or from money, health or family problems.
Alcohol :  Positively no drinking 12 hours before the flight.
Fatigue :  Tiredness effects performance so ensure that you are adequately rested.
Eating :  Eat enough of the proper foods to keep yourself adequately nourished during the entire flight.
To retain a technical knowledge and other procedures even after the completion of training it is very important to formulate a proper study plan and cover specific chapters and topics projected against given month. E.g. FCOM, FCTM, Flight Safety Instructions, company policies as well as other relevant reading materials.
Read one chapter of FCOM a week, read one QRH Abnormal Procedure per day, starting with the less common ones. Practice your manual load sheet calculations, other weight correction problems at least once a month if applicable, revise those special operations you rarely encounter in normal line operations at least once a quarter. In a year you would have covered most of the aircraft technical and other relevant reading materials. Go through the cycle again. Spare time at outstations during slip pattern could be ideally utilized for this purpose. Keep your manuals and QRH updated with the latest revisions. Read international flight magazines to keep abreast with the latest developments in modern aviation.
